The relationship between a driver and their team principal can be a defining factor in their success. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has a unique approach to motivating his star driver, Lewis Hamilton. His method? A blend of tough love and a call to resilience. Wolff has been dealing with Lewis Hamilton‘s constant complaints about the Mercedes car for 2023. Hamilton’s grievances, a recurring theme over the past two years, have probably been a source of frustration for Wolff and his patience seems to be wearing off.
During the recent Austrian GP, Hamilton voiced numerous complaints over the team radio, accusing other drivers of exceeding track limits. In response, Wolff delivered a blunt message: “The car is bad, we know that… Please drive it.” This direct approach is a reflection of Wolff’s management style or probably a sign of an internal cold war at Brackley. Regardless, Toto’s message was decoded on the F1 Nation podcast.
According to German journalist Silja Rulle on the F1 Nation podcast, it appears that it is not something to be taken too seriously and it may not be as significant as initially thought. During the podcast, you can hear the speaker jovially remark, “Toto has a fun way of saying things. Yeah, I also understood it the way you did. It’s just like, ‘Just do it, come on, don’t complain,’ because he was talking so much on the team radio about Checo having track limits. So, he was a bit like, talking a lot about the mistakes of others. We just heard some radios of that, but probably the team had lots of these radios.”

And Toto later clarified his intentions as well, according to an article by Marca, stating, “Sometimes there is a certain moment when you need to calm things down, but I did it with the best of intentions.” Wolff’s approach to handling Hamilton’s complaints provides an intriguing insight into the dynamics within the Mercedes team.
However, this is not the only instance where Wolff’s unconventional motivational tactics have come to light.
Toto Wolff and his radio messages…
In another instance, during the sprint qualifying in Brazil 2021, Hamilton was sent to the back of the grid due to a technical infringement. Despite the setback, Hamilton managed to pull off 15 overtakes in just 23 laps, finishing fifth. Following this impressive performance, Wolff’s radio message to Hamilton was a defiant “F*** them all.”

Wolff later explained that his message was not a dig at Formula 1’s rule-makers but a call for resilience amidst hardship. As per a Crash.net article, he stated, “It is generally a mindset we have that sometimes when there is hardship you need to build up resilience, and that is meant by saying f*** them all.”
