Being the oldest on the grid by a margin and still performing at the highest level. Not many can compete with Fernando Alonso in this particular aspect. The ambitious Spaniard has time and again proven his mettle behind a Formula 1 single-seater. However, most know Alonso isn’t competing in the premier class to kill time. The two-time world champion has ‘El Plan’ to roll back the glory days. Although no one, especially Alonso, thinks the glory days will be back with a snap of the finger.

The Spaniard made the questionable move to switch sides and pledge his allegiance to Aston Martin. The struggling Silverstone-based outfit did not offer much to Sebastian Vettel. However, there are many who believe Alonso will reap the rewards of Vettel’s groundwork in the team.

Although that isn’t Alonso’s belief when news outlet RaceFans asked about his race, and even championship, winning expectations. In fact, he said, “I do believe that is a possibility. I don’t think this year – I’m honest on that. I have, as I say, my feet on the ground. I cannot say to anyone that we will be fighting for victory this year – I will lie if I say that.”

Alonso is keeping himself grounded with the weight of expectations. However, the ardent Spaniard is ready to pounce on any opportunity he gets. “Maybe in the second part of the year, we can get closer – if there is an opportunity, there is changeable conditions, there is something that when the opportunity comes, we will not miss that opportunity,” he added.

Not many would compare Alonso with Lance Stroll. The Canadian is a relatively young driver and does not have anything close to Alonso’s wealth of experience. However, since Lance has been a part of the team for long, the Spaniard believes he is the benchmark for him on the team.
