Button hoped that Honda and McLaren were successful during their stint
Honda did supply engines to the Woking-based outfit back in the ’90s and were successful. But, when they partnered again from 2015 to 2017, they weren’t as victorious as they hoped they would be.
Addressing this, Button said, as reported by Motorsport.com, “I was with Honda when they entered Formula 1 with the hybrid V6 project and it wasn’t easy for them. In the hybrid era they suffered at the beginning and were a couple of years behind the others and they paid for a lot of reliability problems.

“I think it’s a pity that McLaren didn’t continue the relationship with Honda. It was easy for them to point the finger at the least reliable component when they were not competitive. Now, thanks also to the experience gained and working with a team like Red Bull it seems that they have found a solid partnership,” Button concluded. (Translated from Italian via Google)
