Sebastian Vettel has not had the start he was hoping for at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Not only did Vettel slip down a place from where he started on the opening lap, but he has also managed to send Haas man Kevin Magnussen on a merry spin.

The four-time world champion saw his Scuderia Ferrari slip behind Magnussen, heading into turn 7. As the Dane tried to turn into the slow left-hander, Vettel managed to creep behind him and squeeze his car through the little window on the inside.

However, the gap was not enough and Vettel’s front right tire made contact with Magnussen’s rear left. This caused the Haas man to be bumped out of the way, spinning around in the process and ending up behind the pack.

Vettel was under investigation for that incident. Luckily for him, the FIA have given him the all-clear. The German can breathe a sigh of relief now, safe in the knowledge that his race hasn’t gotten any worse so far.

This was one of the few notable bits of action in the opening few laps at Imola. The other talking point was Max Verstappen putting his Red Bull ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who got off to a slow start.

How is Sebastian Vettel placed at the halfway mark of the race?

Following that drama-filled start, Vettel has recovered rather well. Having started the race in P14, Vettel now finds himself in uncharted territory this season, sitting in P4!

However, before any of the Tifosi get too excited, it’s worth mentioning that the German has yet to pit. As a result, Vettel is still on 33 lap old mediums. He is ahead of the two other cars who haven’t pitted, namely Kimi Raikkonen and Nicholas Latifi.

Ferrari missed a narrow opportunity to get Vettel a new set of tires during a virtual safety car period a couple of laps earlier. However, in their defense, the window was incredibly short.

It seems as though only divine intervention can keep Vettel in the points. Were he to not make the top 10 by the end of the race, this would be the seventh time that has happened this season, including two retirements.

Can Vettel miraculously bag some points in Imola? We’ll soon see.
