Fernando Alonso will be joining Renault in 2021 alongside Esteban Ocon. Meanwhile, Alonso is back in the garage pit this weekend at Imola.
In an interview with Sky F1, Fernando Alonso was asked to take his pick of a future star among the drivers of the new generation on the grid. Alonso stated that George Russell, in particular, has stood out for him.
He explained, “George Russell is the one that surprises me every weekend. How he’s driving the Williams. Zero mistakes. I’m really surprised about his natural speed.”
“So if I have to say one name, Russell for the future is going to be my pick.”
Alonso acknowledged that there are very talented drivers in Formula 1 now. Additionally, there are systems in place where a prospective F1 driver is introduced to racing at an early age.
Fernando mentioned, “They all came with very nice preparation as well with driver academies that build the performance and the talent, helping them from a very young age”.
However, Alonso was asked to pick one name. He picked Russell and further stated that he is going to be a future star.
The British driver joined the grid as a Formula 2 champion at 21 years old. Moreover, Russell has had a very impressive 2020 season.
Russell’s career is managed by Mercedes but is currently on a three-year loan to Williams. Nevertheless, it is speculated that he will be the top contender for the next vacant seat at the Silver Arrows.
Even though the Williams car does not allow him to consistently fight for points, he has still impressed everyone with his skills of extracting the best out of that car.
George Russell has out-qualified his teammate in every one of their 33 races. In 2020 alone, he has managed to catapult Williams into Q2 on seven occasions.
It was recently speculated that Russell will be replaced by Sergio Perez at Williams. However, the speculations were ended by Williams at Imola when they reconfirmed the current pair as their 2021 drivers lineup.
Such is the skill of Russell, that he has made everyone pray for his scoring a point driving Williams. He has been close a couple of times. Russell must be aiming to lift the Williams into Q1. Hopefully, with a sprinkle of good fortune, he may even get Williams into the points.
