Esteban Ocon stepped up in 2020 towards the last leg of the season. The Frenchman scored his debut podium in the Sakhir Grand Prix as he finished P2, matching the best result for Renault all season.
Ocon demonstrated serious pace as he finished in the top 4 during Free Practice 1 and Free Practice 2. However, he had a disappointing qualifying, starting P11 on the grid for the main race.
A podium finish for Ocon in the race was unexpected, and that probably makes it more special.

In Formula 1, a driver is in a consistent battle with his teammate. Both possess the same machine, therefore, are more comparable to each other than anyone else. In 2021, Ocon will team up with Fernando Alonso as Renault rebrands itself as Alpine.
Daniel Ricciardo, Ocon’s last teammate, out-qualified him 15-2 in 2020. However, the Frenchman has clarified that he has no intention of being overshadowed by his future teammate, who is a former world champion.
He said, “Fernando is a very talented driver, twice World Champion. It will be very difficult to beat him and I am aware of that. But I will push as hard as I can and he will do the same. I am not afraid of him. If I had any [fears] I would have to leave Formula 1 right away.”

“It was crucial to build a strong relationship with the team and get to know everyone, and transferring the trust to the car took longer than expected. Now I have it and it shows,” he pointed out.
He further added, “I also think having a year out didn’t help me. I had great pace at the end of 2018 and after being out you need some time to update. But I don’t use it as an excuse in terms of the standings.”
