Sebastian Vettel had a resurgent 2021 season as he showed some of his old pace in his first year at Aston Martin. The four-time world champion finished in P2 in Baku and P5 in Monaco. He also challenged for the win in Hungary before a post-race disqualification. Still, he could not make it to Anthony Davidson’s Top-5 drivers’ list.

The former F1 driver and Sky Sports pundit mentioned that Daniel Ricciardo and Seb Vettel are not in the Top-5 right now. He also explained the reasons behind not picking the Aston Martin driver on his list.

I don’t think Sebastian Vettel has been the same driver as he was: F1 pundit

As reported by Motorsport.nl, the Sky Sports pundit gave his Top-5, which included the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and Lando Norris. He stated that according to him, the German driver has never regained his 2013 peak in Formula One.

“When you talk about the best five drivers, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton are, of course, among them, and Charles Leclerc is also one of the best. If you then mention Carlos Sainz, you already have four. And then we have Lando Norris. Then I’m already on five,” said Anthony.

“It went up and down a bit. Some circuits suited him better than others. But across the board, I saw a driver who is more comfortable in his own skin. And that usually results in better performance.

I have the impression that he has never felt quite at home in the bigger and heavier car that entered Formula 1 in 2014. I don’t think he has been the same driver as he was before. He had the pace in his early days at Ferrari, but I saw a difference in driving compared to those fantastic years at Red Bull, said Davidson.

It is a fair point mentioned by Davidson as Vettel has made more errors on the track since leaving Red Bull. It is safe to say the German driver is approaching the twilight of his career, but he still might have another good season left in him. Let’s hope he can show some of his old speed in the 2022 season.
