F1 has seen a massive rise in popularity in the United States in recent years. The hit Netflix docuseries have massively aided this bump in viewership. Recently, F1 also announced a third US Grand Prix to be held in Las Vegas, along with Miami and Austin.

F1 also wants to open its doors to American talent as well when it comes to racing. The Indy car scene is a very competitive one and a few drivers would love the chance to drive in F1.

Domenicali open to American drivers

Recently, F1 has seen a massive boom in the states. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali urged the grid to see some all-American talent. The sport has not seen an American driver since 2015 when Alexander Rossi drove a few races for Manor Marussia.

He said, “It’s important because it’s the people who make the difference,” commenting on the importance of the drivers. He went on to add “it will certainly have a big impact. From a commercial point of view …., a woman or a man as a driver would be very important.”

An American in F1 soon

F1 already has an American team on the grid with Haas. Andretti Motorsport is always looking to enter the sport and would make it 2 American teams in F1. Michael Andretti has also promised to use American driver, Colton Herta, if he starts his team. Herta is also set to test with McLaren as a part of a development agreement.

Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei also said, “it’s only becoming more likely that we’ll have an American driver soon,”. However, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali emphasized that it must be a planned decision and not a quick fix.

There has not been a full-time American driver on the grid since Scott Speed who drove for Toro Rosso in 2006 and 2007. However, the tide seems to turn and another American on the grid does not look very far off.
