Christian Horner on 2022 cost cap

The cost cap means that the big teams like Red Bull Ferrari and Mercedes will have to undergo some major cost-cutting to make things work. Several team principals along with Horner have raised an issue with the cost cap keeping in mind the current inflation.

According to the Red Bull team, principal inflation could account for $10’s of millions throughout the season. This would seriously stunt the team’s development plans for their cars.

Amid all this, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali reassured that things will be done right. However, he has 2 major concerns. He said, “first, whether the teams like it or not, is that of control, because if those who have to regulate miss something, the whole system collapses.”

He went on to add, “it is not enough to check only the technical side, but you also need strict financial control,”. Speaking about his second concern Domenicali said, “The second point obviously relates to some variables that are difficult to predict at the time of the launch of financial regulation.”. His second concern is accounting for inflation and logistic costs, the two major concerns of the teams.

He also added that the cost cap will be subject to review and changes as and when the situation arises.

Red Bull in 2022

Red Bull has had somewhat of a mixed start to the season in terms of results. The season opener saw both their cars retire with suspected fuel pump issues. However, the second race in Jeddah saw them clinch pole with Sergio Perez and steal the race win from Charles Leclerc with Max Verstappen. Most importantly, they have been quick and fighting at the front against Ferrari.

They currently sit P3 in the constructors’ standings with Australia next on the calendar. Although there are reports of upgrades being brought to the RB-18, they might not be implemented before the Australian GP. All in all, this season is shaping up to be a scintillating battle at the front of the grid.
