Formula 1 is entering a new era with a major overhaul in regulations, the biggest one since 1983. These changes aim towards making the 2022 F1 car safer and more competitive than ever. One major difference is that the upcoming car design will have simplified top-body aerodynamics and a more neutral front wing. FIA regulations did this with an intent to tackle the ‘dirty air’ and encourage close battles on the track.
Apart from that, the new cars have less temperature-sensitive 18-inch Pirelli rubbers, with the addition of over-wheel winglets. The new additions will push the overall weight of the car 5% on the higher side. As per many insiders, the 2022 grid will look fundamentally different from the previous years. Drivers like Sebastian Vettel and Alex Albon have already taken their new cars out for a spin.

As teams have made their new cars from the scratch, many believe players like Ferrari and McLaren can join Red Bull and Mercedes in the front to mount a title challenge. Recently, F1 managing director Ross Brawn also gave his opinions on the same. He also expects some serious fight at the front this season, however, it will not come from lower midfield teams.

2022 F1 season will have a bigger competitive pool: Ross Brawn
The 2021 F1 season saw 6 different Grand Prix winners, however, none except Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton won more than one race. Many F1 insiders, including Brawn, expect things to change this season. In a recent interview, the F1 motorsports chief said that though drivers from McLaren and Ferrari will have their chance at the front, there will not be a drastic change in the order of the grid.
“I don’t think we’re going to see Mick Schumacher dominate this year… I think we’ll see some of the midfield teams challenging so I think we’ll have a bigger group of competitive teams,” he said. “Last year, we either expected a Mercedes or a Red Bull to win unless something different happened.”

“We’re blessed with a number of great drivers in Formula 1 today. Lando Norris, the Ferrari drivers, we’ve got George Russell in the Mercedes. I think there’s any number of combination of drivers that give us a fantastic season and if there’s three or four of them mixing it up, that’s even better,” added Brawn.
