Mercedes believed that taking over the championship-winning team and car would be the formula for success. However, they didn’t know how much Brawn had scaled down its operations due to losses. As a result, Mercedes had to invest heavily in personnel and tangible assets in 2012. Questions were raised when Lewis Hamilton decided to join Mercedes in 2013. Even his father asked him not to join Mercedes, but the Briton saw something in the team. 

Lewis Hamilton’s decision to join Mercedes reaped massive fruits as he went on to win 6 titles with the team. In a video posted on YouTube recently, Lewis Hamilton is seen reminiscing about his decision to join the Mercedes F1 team. His first win with the team at his favorite hunting ground was a confirmation of the greatness and dominance that Mercedes had in its locker. The Briton revealed how Hungaroring is his favorite hunting ground and that his choice to join the silver arrows was the right one. 

According to the video uploaded by Mercedes on YouTube, Lewis Hamilton said “First win in Budapest which has always been an amazing hunting ground for me, a track that I really enjoyed. And I think this was really… if there were any doubts about the decision whether or not you are right or wrong, I think this was a confirmation that it was the right step, it was great to get back on the podium and solidify the decision that team took to be with me.”

Despite the 8 dominating years, Mercedes is in a slump. 2022 was a shocker and 2023 doesn’t seem to get any better. However, there’s hope for at least a win as Mercedes introduces a new concept and Lewis Hamilton gets ready to hunt the grid in Budapest. 

Why is Hungaroring Lewis Hamilton’s favorite hunting ground?

Lewis Hamilton has been the most successful driver at the Hungaroring winning a total of 8 races at the circuit. The seven-time world champion won the 2020 Hungarian GP, equaling the record for the most wins on a single circuit. The record was previously held by Michael Schumacher who won the French GP eight times. Despite the W13 flaws, Lewis Hamilton managed to finish P2 at Budapest in 2022, with the fastest lap being only 7 seconds behind the speedy Max Verstappen.

The Briton suggested after the 2022 Hungarian GP that he would’ve been fighting for the win had it not been for a DRS issue in Q3 which caused him a crucial track position. Hungaroring is a very tight and narrow circuit which makes overtaking difficult. Hence the importance of grid position. Lewis Hamilton’s statements, along with the facts, suggest that Hungaroring is indeed the Briton’s most clinical hunting ground.
