Get the Popcorn ready! Netflix Drive to Survive is coming back for Season 5. While F1 fans have had a love-hate relationship with the show; DTS just manages to generate the hype every year with a new season. Fans would dearly hope that Netflix may have made a little more realistic this year than all the fake unnecessary drama in its recent seasons. Although, season 5 will also be bringing the reigning champion Max Verstappen back in the chair under the lights! Apparently, fans have given a mixed reception to this change for 2023.

Verstappen had been a big critic of how Netflix created fake drama out of nothing to sensationalize the show. Max had opted out of DTS in 2021. As quoted by Racefans.net, Verstappen told the Associated Press in 2021, “They faked a few rivalries which they don’t really exist. So I decided to not be a part of it and did not give any more interviews after that because then there is nothing you can show.”

So, Max did not personally appear in season 4 released at the start of 2022. Though, with securing his 2nd championship, and after some negotiations behind the scenes, Netflix has managed to get him in the chair again.

But, this has not gone down well with a majority of fans. They have called out the Red Bull driver on the backtracking of his previous claims. Despite having criticized the show’s format, Max now feels alright to appear on it within the space of a year or so. Fans have labeled Verstappen’s change of mind as “hypocrisy”.

Eventually, fans have taken to social media and expressed their reactions to Max’s Netflix comeback. Nonetheless, it is good to see all drivers being together on the show, rather than someone taking off on their own. But, we hope that every driver gets his moment in the show and that a realistic and balanced narrative is shown.

Fans React to Max Verstappen Coming Back on Drive to Survive

As usual, fans have not held back on reacting to the latest development of the Verstappen-DTS charade. Max feels quite alright in the latest First Look teaser for season 5 of the show. But, fans are not alright about his backtracking of previous claims in 2021.

Fans have clearly labeled Verstappen as the “Ultimate Hypocrite” after his u-turn about Netflix and DTS. To be fair, it does seem odd to be heavily critical of a certain thing and then be positive a year later about the same.

Given what has happened in the sport with Red Bull and Max in the last 3 years, the Dutchman may want to be the voice representing their point of view. Alongside Christian Horner who has been a core part of DTS, Netflix can achieve a balanced narrative with Max as well on the show.

Nevertheless, fans on social media won’t be taking this sudden u-turn by Verstappen on his criticism of Drive to Survive. Despite Netflix being overdramatic in their storyline, they are at least being clear about their show’s objectives – popularizing F1 more and more.

Regardless, it is good to see Max Verstappen being participative with Netflix again. Overall, we hope this does not change again with the Red Bull champion opting out of the show again. What do you think of Verstappen’s comeback to Drive to Survive? And are you excited about the new season of DTS?
