Red Bull’s Sergio Perez took a historic win at the Monaco Grand Prix. And he proceeded to send F1 Twitter into a frenzy when he said to his boss Christian Horner, “I probably signed too early”. This left everybody questioning whether the Mexican had already signed an extension. When asked in the post-race conference, he laughed off, saying, “I meant the bottle of champagne.”

And it seems now that the three-time Grand Prix winner meant what he said, as his new contract sees him staying with Red Bull until 2024. While it may seem like a victory for many, for the likes of Pierre Gasly, this wasn’t a great sign.

After parting ways from the leading team and heading back into the sister team, AlphaTauri, the Frenchman had it all to prove. Since then he has taken a win, two podiums, and been in top form with ambitions of returning to Red Bull. However, Red Bull’s decision to extend Sergio’s contract only means that Pierre Gasly has to either wait or look elsewhere for a seat.

Pierre Gasly’s 2022 season has not been like his previous one in 2021. With a car that’s not quite good, Gasly has been struggling to get into the points this year. And while he missed out to finish in the points, he did produce overtakes in Monaco; a track particularly hard to overtake.

“My goal is to be in Red Bull, and there’s no surprise in that, I want to be in a car which allows me to fight for wins and podiums,” said Gasly in 2021. “That will always be the target, that’s what I’m working for every morning, working on myself, trying to be a better driver to win races and that’s the goal.”

With Red Bull firmly shutting the door on Gasly’s return, it seems like the 26-year-old has some decisions to make for the future.
