2022 saw two of the greats in the game face bad luck early in the season. Yes, both Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso have been hit with misfortunes off late. However, Fernando has had some better outings than his German counterpart. But can this be the reason why Aston Martin is looking for a potential replacement?

According to reports, the rumors have strengthened for the Spaniard to replace Vettel at the Silverstone-based team. Fernando Alonso has been on Aston Martin’s radar lately, as the British team looks for a potential replacement for the German in 2023.

As of now, neither Fernando nor Sebastian has extended or renewed their contracts with their respective teams. Both the driver’s contracts are due to expire at the end of the season. As Vettel is yet to clarify his future ambitions, Aston Martin’s radar closes in on Alonso. However, to make it more contradictory, Seb has stated that he can give more years to F1.

Will Fernando Alonso be a good replacement for Sebastian Vettel?

Anyone from outside will take a look at this season’s points table and say Sebastian Vettel is in a better position than Fernando Alonso. At least that’s what the point table says and, statistically, that is true. The German has four points in four races, whereas the two times world champion has two. Apart from the points, the actual truth is somewhat different.

Talking about the cars, Alpine has a pretty strong car as compared to Aston Martin this year. The A522 is comparatively faster on the straight-line as compared to the AMR-22s. Moreover, they face less porpoising on tracks, which arguably makes them even better than the W13 of Mercedes.

This is Alonso’s second season on the French team after he joined them in 2021. The ‘El Plan’ master made his Alpine look pretty strong for a mid-field car throughout this season. His fights in Q3 in the last couple of races are the proof of that.

Talking about Vettel, this has been his second year at Aston Martin as well. After joining them from Ferrari in 2021, the four-time world champion pulled off just one podium place for the team. As the time goes on and neither Seb nor Alonso talk about a contract renewal, it’ll be interesting to see how things will shake up for the 2023 season.
