The drama in Alpine is crossing the borders of fathomable dimensions. Their worries were expected to reduce after new investors bought a stake in the company. But it’s all gone downhill for the Enstone outfit since. Along with a slow car, even the management is poor. And Alpine’s ex-Executive director believes that the sublime performance by their ex-drivers – Fernando Alonso and Oscar Piastri, will only aggravate their woes.

Alonso recently said that he wanted to renew his contract with Alpine for 2023. But the management dragged the talks for a long period and so, he decided to quit the team. Alpine’s decision showcased irony at its best. The driver that wanted to race for them (Alonso) was not considered, but the driver they wanted to sign (Piastri) flat-out denied racing with them. And in 2023, both these drivers have gotten podiums for their new teams while Alpine is rotting in the midfield. Marcin Budkowski, Alpine’s ex-Executive Director, believes that this has to sting the Enstone outfit.
Budkowski said, as quoted by f1maximaal, “It has to be said that Aston Martin’s results this year, and also McLaren’s, have shown that progress can be accelerated, although you can see Aston Martin slipping back a bit now, and McLaren has its good and its had bad moments. It is not a linear process, but those results from Aston Martin and McLaren have not helped the situation at Alpine, no. So it is extra sour for Alpine that former drivers Alonso and Piastri are now winning the points for those teams.”

Alonso is a 2-time champion, and he has nothing left to prove to anybody. But Piastri, specifically, has risen so quickly to the top that even Max Verstappen has taken notice of the rookie’s amazing form.

Piastri’s recent performance with McLaren has been nothing short of genius. He has outperformed his more experienced teammate and has taken the fight directly to the rampant Verstappen. Though the MCL60 is no match for the RB19, he has shown his racing prowess. So, when the Dutchman was asked about Piastri’s performance, he lauded the Australian rookie.

Verstappen said, after the Belgian GP, “Yes, it’s always good. I mean, I’ve been in that position as well, where the younger guy comes in. It’s nice and it’s great and Oscar’s having a very strong season in general. But I think also this weekend, he has been really on it. So it’s always nice to, for the first time, basically race him.”

Piastri has been a revelation this season. McLaren can only be thankful to Alpine for making poor decisions that drove the Australian racer away from them and towards McLaren.
