Fernando Alonso hit it off pretty well with Lance Stroll ever since he joined Aston Martin earlier this year. His kind words for his teammate almost came as a surprise to many who knew about his past relationships with his teammates. Until now, the duo is going strong, helping each other out on the track. However, it might not continue that way if a fiery incident from last year ever became a topic of debate between them.

The friction between Alonso and his teammates can be traced back to 2007 when he paired up with rookie Lewis Hamilton at McLaren. The pairing never got off to a good start and eventually finished the season on the same number of points, missing out on the championship by just one point. For his most recent fractious relationship, all one has to do is turn the clock to last year when he was teammates with Esteban Ocon at Alpine. But things are surprisingly going well for him at Aston Martin with Lance as his wingman.

Will Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll have a falling out because of a past incident?

In one of his recent YouTube videos, veteran F1 journalist Peter Windsor predicted a falling out between Alonso and Stroll. He also talked about the Lap 22 incident between the duo last year at the US Grand Prix when they drove for different teams. Alonso ran into the back of Stroll, which ended the Canadian’s race. The crash looked horrible for live viewers, but luckily, both drivers came out unscathed.

In the same YouTube video, Windsor said, “Last year there was still friction between Alonso and Stroll because an incident happened during the United States Grand Prix, which Alonso will probably not easily forget.” [Translated using Google]

“It’s just a little over the top, all the praise about Stroll all the time, how over the top everything is. It just can’t go on like this all year round.”

As fans and experts expressed their surprise at Fernando constantly praising and finding ways to help him, the Spaniard took exception to their remarks. He blamed the F1 media for highlighting his helpful messages only now, despite him always being a helpful teammate. He also lauded Lance for being the ideal teammate who reciprocated the respect.

Right from the start of the Azerbaijan GP, Alonso was on Hamilton’s tail. However, he also ran the risk of losing his place to Stroll, who was right behind him. However, playing the ultimate team game, Lance told his race engineer to tell Fernando that he will not attack him. That is a gesture the Asturian driver really appreciated.

“Yes, I try to help Lance, but we cannot forget that also he’s very smart and he’s a driver that I think [of] as a team-mate, as we saw in Baku,” Alonso told Sky Sports.

“Last year I had, like, maybe the opposite. I had always my team-mate, like the first target was me. So that was obviously not beneficial for the team.”
