It was about a year back when Fernando Alonso signed up for Aston Martin. Little did anyone expect him to be smashing the competition & get an abundance of podiums. This sudden renaissance boosted the Green team’s confidence with Alonso saying he may be on the podium every race after the 2023 Spanish GP. Although, the same Aston Martin team who were saying great things have toned down a bit as their Boss Mike Krack turns on the fans with a reality check amid Fernando Alonso’s 2 race drought. What did the Aston Martin boss say?

Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso had an absolute flying start to the season scoring 5 podiums in 6 races. However, the weekend in Spain was a little disappointing with the upgraded Mercedes overtaking the AMR23 in terms of pace. The Silverstone team brought major upgrades of their own for the very next race and the Spaniard was again on the podium. However, since the highs of Canada, the AMR 23 has fallen backward with McLaren making a huge jump.

Aston didn’t score a single podium in Austria or in Silverstone. Even Fernando Alonso’s podium promise was broken due to this two-race podium drought. In light of the performance drop-off, Mike Krack has come to set the expectations of the fans right. Was that it for Aston Martin’s 2023 glory? 2 races without a podium and Mike Krack wants to set the expectations right?

According to Speedweek.com, Mike Krack said “I’ve always emphasized that the fans shouldn’t expect us to finish on the podium at every race. Our interim record of six podium finishes in ten races is impressive, but it was always clear to us that there will also be weekends when we struggle. Silverstone was one such weekend, as was Spain. But we are convinced that this will change again.” [translated via Google]

Despite asking the fans to adjust the expectations, the Aston Martin Boss did give a valid explanation for the same as we’ve seen different cars perform differently based on the characteristics of the track. Nonetheless, Krack remains positive about making changes with an upward trajectory. But what about Alonso’s podium promise?

Fernando Alonso went into his home GP in Spain with the hopes of getting out of the car with “Como 33”. However, that was not the case as the car kept falling backward and finished nowhere near the podium. However, when a fiery Alonso was asked if the Aston Martin hype train had run out of steam, Alonso replied “It will not happen again, this is the last race without a podium!”

Whilst that Promise was kept in Canada where the Spaniard drove brilliantly while nursing a problem and finished P2, the same couldn’t be repeated in Austria and in Silverstone. The promise was shattered and so were the hopes of the fans eagerly waiting to see Alonso on the podium.
