Fernando Alonso is currently driving for Aston Martin and stands at P8 on the drivers cup. At the Australian Grand Prix, he was defeated by two positions by his teammate Lance Stroll who came in at P6. The P8 finish is not something the Spaniard is happy with, and there is a chance that he will be changing his team after his contract expires. Where will he go after this? This is something that is going on in everyone’s mind.

Answering some of the questions, Pat Symonds stepped up at the ‘Beyond the Grid’ podcast to talk about the 2-time world champion. While there are rumors of a tug of war for the Spaniard, his former engineer believes that Mercedes is the way.

Tom Clarkson, the host of the Beyond the Grid podcast, invited Pat Symonds to his show to talk about his experience as an engineer over several decades. Symonds talked about Fernando Alonso’s career and what he should be doing in 2025. When Tom Clarkson asked, “If you were Toto Wolf, would you put him alongside George Russell for a seasonal or two next year?” It didn’t take a second for Symonds to reply with a “Yep.”

Symonds explained, “I really rate the guy. I think he’s incredibly fast. So, if I was looking for what’s the best result I could get in 2025, who do I need to help me with my brand new 2026 car to a totally new set of regulations? Fernando is your man.” But he then moved to the problem with having Alonso in Mercedes and that was George Russell.

Symonds told Clarkson, “However, then you’re left with the problem aren’t you? You’re left with the problem of Goerge who’s been there a few years and thinking of where do I go next? Fernando who probably, at that point, says yeah, okay. I’ve proven it; it’s time to move on. People always underestimate the value of continuity.” This take from the veteran world champion engineer is one important thing to consider.

But there is one factor that should not be forgotten, there are rumors of Red Bull wanting the 2 time world champion.  And let’s take a look at what has been developing on that end.

While both Mercedes and Red Bull Racing are great teams for Fernando Alonso, it’s not yet sure that he will leave Aston Martin. Flavio Briatore, Alonso’s manager, has discussed the possibility of Alonso leaving Aston Martin and joining either Mercedes or Red Bull Racing. He sees potential in both teams but leans towards Red Bull Racing, stating that the opportunity may be more promising in Milton Keynes.

According to Briatore, Red Bull Racing’s team principal, Christian Horner, is interested in reaching an agreement with Alonso. This interest stems from Red Bull Racing’s desire to maintain dominance in Formula 1, especially if Max Verstappen decides to leave the team. And Alonso is sure to bring a wealth of experience to any team he joins. His performances at Aston Martin have showcased his skills, even though the team’s competitiveness might not match that of front-runners like Mercedes and Red Bull Racing.
