Ferrari team principal team Mattia Binotto confirmed that the team was considering other forms of motorsport apart from F1. The Italian revealed that Ferrari was seriously considering IndyCar as an option because of its “social responsibility” towards employees.
Scuderia Ferrari interested in joining IndyCar
Recently, Binotto hinted at Ferrari looking towards other racing series’ over F1’s upcoming budget cap. For those unaware, Formula 1 is enforcing a $145 Million cost cap on all teams from 2021. The financial ceiling was initially $175 Million, which several teams opposed. The Smaller teams successfully pushed for a reduction, but it didn’t go down to well with the Maranello outfit.

With coronavirus causing a major financial crunch, Binotto opposed a reduced cap citing layoffs as a serious reason. The Italian argued that several factory workers would lose their jobs if Ferrari was forced to reduce its spending by a significant margin. Binotto suggested implementing separate budget caps on customer teams and engine suppliers.

Binotto on Ferrari’s other options
As expected, Mattia’s second argument didn’t go down too well with the smaller teams. Nevertheless, F1 is going ahead with a reduced cap and it appears the Italian team is evaluating alternatives apart from F1. Speaking to Sky Sports Italy, Binotto elaborated on Ferrari’s proposed plans.
“Ferrari feels a lot of social responsibility towards its employees and we want to be sure that for each of them there will be a workspace in the future,”
“For this reason, we have started to evaluate alternative programs and I confirm that we are looking at IndyCar, which is currently a very different category from ours.”

“At Ferrari, we were structuring ourselves based on the budget approved last year ($175m), and the further reduction represents an important challenge that will inevitably lead us to review staff, structure, and the organization.”
“We also observe the world of endurance racing and other series,” said Binotto.
“We will try to make the best choice”

It’s unlikely for the Scuderia to walk away from F1, given its illustrious and long-standing association. As much as F1 needs Ferrari, Ferrari needs F1.
But it will be interesting to see how Ferrari approaches IndyCar, which is uncharted territory for the Maranello outfit.
