Ferrari F1 Graduate Callum Ilott Opens Up on His Expulsion From Red Bull Driver Academy

Callum Ilott has been a member of Ferrari junior academy since 2017 and he’s currently taking part in the Endurance Cup and 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, he previously he had a one-year stint at the Red Bull junior academy. The Milton Keynes-based team saw a lot of potential in the 22-year-old and signed him in 2015 before he made his Formula 3 debut.

Unfortunately, things did not go as planned for Callum Ilott as he finished fourth in the championship without registering a single win. As a result, the young Brit was dropped from the Austrian academy at the end of the year.

What did Callum Ilott say?

Red Bull has produced many brilliant talents over the years with the likes of four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, current championship leader Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz and the list goes on and on. But unfortunately, the young brit driver was not a great success at the Austrian academy.

Speaking about his time at the Red Bull academy, he told Autosport, “Red Bull has had a lot of success with its juniors. “It just doesn’t work with everyone. Everyone is just different.”

After being dropped from Red Bull, Ilott joined Ferrari drivers academy. The Brit got the faith from the Maranello-based team which helped him to develop himself further.

“It had to be like this. You get a certain position and you have to make the best of it,” said Callum Ilott.

Ilott’s future in Formula 1

The 22-year-old was a runner-up at last year’s Formula 2 championship with three wins, losing out to now Haas driver, Mick Schumacher.

Callum Ilott currently is a test driver for Ferrari and test and reserve driver for Alfa Romeo. Coming up through the ranks from the Ferrari academy, the Brit would be hoping for a seat at the Maranello-based team, but the chances for that are quite slim.

The Ferrari duo has been excellent this season with both Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc securing one podium each this season. Moreover, Leclerc had the chance to secure the first win for Ferrari, but despite impressive resilience from the Monegasque, Lewis Hamilton overtook him with just three laps to go.
