After Toto Wolff fired shots on Red Bull yesterday, another heavyweight has had their say about teams allegedly exceeding the budget cap. While the Singapore GP makes a comeback to the F1 calendar, it is anything but a normal race week. Ferrari has joined Mercedes in demanding strict retribution for any team breaching the $145M budget allotted for 2021 season.

While Red Bull has played down any speculation of exceeding the budget cap, rumors suggesting otherwise have caught pace. Ferrari’s race director has called the FIA to imply strict punishments to teams breaching the rulebook and set the precedents right.

Talking to Sky Italia, Laurent Mekies said, “It’s now no secret that two teams broke the 2021 budget cap regulations, one by a significant amount, the other less so. We regard this as something very serious, and we expect the FIA to manage the situation in exemplary fashion.”

He mentioned that Ferrari backs the FIA 100 percent. Moreover, he stated that FIA had taken strong positions in recent weeks regarding other issues and was confident they will take the right decision again.

“Therefore we expect that, for such a serious matter, there will be complete transparency and maximum penalties to ensure we are all racing within the same rules, because their impact on car performance is huge.”

There is no doubt that it has been a dominant season for Red Bull. However, how FIA views this situation will play a vital role in their current as well as past championship bids. Their rivals have now started to breathe down FIA’s neck for a strict resolution if there’s any breach.

Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto comments on the implications of exceeding the budget cap

Mattia Binotto, Ferrari’s Team Principal, has opened up about rival teams potentially benefitting from exceeding the budget cap. The Italian also stated that FIA needs to be strong while making decisions regarding the issue.

Binotto firmly stated that breach of the financial regulations can affect the championship. Yesterday, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff also claimed that a breach in previous years can have implications on future championships as well.

Mattia said, “The financial regulations can make differences between teams in the way they are interpreting and somehow executing it.”

He further stated, “We know we need to have a very strong FIA to make sure they are properly focusing. Otherwise, the regulations will not be fair and equitable.”

It didn’t take long for the drama to unfold at the Singapore GP. Mercedes fired shots at Red Bull yesterday, and today, Ferrari has also demanded serious repercussions for teams breaching last year’s budget cap.
