In the third time of asking, Formula 1 might just fulfill its desire to race for a record number of times during a season. The circus has never put on a show more than 22 times during a season. The ambitious 24-race-a-season calendar took a hit in 2023 and was reduced to 22 races similar to the 2022 season with one race struck off the calendar. In fact, many drivers have voiced their opinions about the hectic schedule including Charles Leclerc. However, his confession regarding the considerable amount of races still remaining in the season is making him look like a hypocrite.

Speaking to the media, including Racing News 365, Leclerc revealed his ambitions to finish in the constructor’s championship. However, Ferrari’s unreliability has pushed them to fourth in the championship standings. Despite the undesirable position, Leclerc has high hopes with the Maranello outfit introducing significant upgrades.

“Well, I think a realistic target, first of all, should be to try and be second in the Constructors’, which is going to be a challenge,” said Leclerc. “We have few upgrades coming a bit later on in the second part of the season, which hopefully will make a difference and will help us achieve these targets.”

However, this is the same Monegasuqe who confessed the races 24-race calendar is “too much” and he doesn’t want any more races in a calendar. Without as many races, a second-half turnaround, which Leclerc optimistically aims for will never be possible.

This hypocritical side of Leclerc is rare. Although, in his defense, he does have a different outlook on the hectic schedule than his counterparts.

Selfless Charles Leclerc points out the people most affected by the hectic F1 schedule

There is no doubt the extra interest in the sport is a positive scenario for all entities involved with Formula 1. There is more money to be made as more people take interest. However, this boost to the sport is coming at a cost which stems from the hectic schedule. Many have pointed that out including Leclerc but the Monegasque is looking at things from the perspective of the people most affected by the cramped schedule, the mechanics.

Leclerc rightly pointed out how drivers aren’t the most affected by this schedule. He explained, “I feel like at one point, it just gets too much. Not for us drivers, because we have a really good life. And I think the drivers that are complaining probably don’t realize that the mechanics, the engineers, the guys on the logistics are here three days before us and leave two days after. I think for them, it starts to be quite a bit.”

Leclerc’s outlook paints a really eye-opening picture of the struggles of the people keeping F1 a smooth-running machine. An outlook that we hardly see and that can be missed easily. Keeping this in mind, as a fan, would you like to see more races in a season?
