Daniel Ricciardo was one of F1’s biggest critics when they kept broadcasting replays of Romain Grosjean’s horror crash in Bahrain last year. The McLaren driver acted the same when it came to the kind of content F1’s social media channels puts out from time to time.

Ricciardo made it evidently clear he isn’t cool with how the sport treats crashes and tries to glorify it in order to get views.

Speaking about a particular video, SquareMile reported him as saying, “I think last year, F1 put on their social channels, like, ‘top 10 moments of the year’ or something, and eight of the ten were crashes.

“I was just like, you guys are f***ing idiots. Maybe 12-year-old kids want to see that kind of content, and that’s cool because they don’t know any better, but we’re not kids. Just do better, guys. Do better than that.”

Ricciardo may also not have taken too kindly to the portrayal of Grosjean’s crash in season 3 of the Netflix-produced docuseries, Formula 1: Drive to Survive. However, he does acknowledge that the overall show was a bit of a game-changer for the sport.

The seven-time Grand Prix winner said, “I think the first season of Drive To Survive was awesome. I spend some time in the States, and I noticed it literally from one trip to the next.

“It was the first time I started being recognized and people referencing that TV series. So it certainly did us wonders, even – not to talk social media – but numbers on social media went nuts. It did a lot for us and the sport.”

Season 3 received mixed reviews from fans. But, it did the job of serving as a hype builder for the new season of F1 racing. And if the season opener in Bahrain was anything to go by, then fans are set to expect a special season.

Meanwhile, for Ricciardo, he’ll have his sights set on ending the championship as the best of the rest. Although he has some way to go, considering he is yet to feel fully comfortable in the McLaren MCL35M.
