Undoubtedly, this is the worst season for Team McLaren in the recent past, to add to the misery the squad hasn’t yet scored any convincing points since the start of the season. Where the other competitors are making significant advancements with their enhancements, the Woking-based is still looking for its best form. Meanwhile, Zak Brown‘s “temperamental” remarks have further fanned the flames, leading Oscar Piastri to criticize the Woking-based team for an unpleasant surprise. So what is that surprise that the novice found disappointing?

The worst fall from glory for McLaren came in 2023 at races like Miami, which featured just twice after the inaugural last year. Since then, the team hasn’t improved and the string of misery continues to be strong despite efforts to recover from that horrible day. All of this happened as a result of the team’s inability to meet the developmental objective as the season’s start date drew near.

However, to make things better at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, McLaren added additional improvements and changed the car’s floor to increase aerodynamics. Nevertheless, MCL60’s performance still remained erratic. With intense scrutiny coming from all corners, Brown attempted to divert the attention of the fans with his temperamental comment. The American said, “I think race cars are temperamental in their characteristics.”

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were already dissatisfied with the way their car performed, and comments like these just made things worse. As a result, Piastri has attacked McLaren for what he perceives to be an unpleasant surprise, citing to F1i.cominconsistency from track to track” as the source of his dissatisfaction. Later, the 22-year-old added, “We seem to be a bit up and down at the moment, but we are working on that.”

Even though MCL60s performance on race day has improved little, what’s happening in qualifying sends a conflicting message to the team. For instance, Lando Norris’ P3 at the Spanish GP qualifying may have been an adequate outcome for McLaren. Although there is still some discrepancy, Piastri describes the characteristics of their vehicle while revealing the team’s efforts.

Despite the season’s unfavorable outcome for them, the Woking-based team’s efforts to advance, or their willingness to perform, have persisted. The Woking-based team will be striving to offer their best effort now as the F1 circus is getting ready to enter round nine.

This can be achieved as further upgrades are on the card and will be released over the course of the following three races due to the continuous development process going on. And while applauding the team’s efforts, he said, “To catch the top teams, we need more development, but I think we have been getting on top of the setup of the current car. I think we have nailed that part, and now we need some bigger bits to take that next step.”

While adding further Piastri discussed the precise functioning of the MCL 60, “Generally, our car works when it is cold and damp, which we saw on Sunday in Monaco and in qualifying in Spain. I think that is the strength of our car right now, and that is where it has felt the most comfortable.”
