To be successful in a sport like Formula 1, there has to be an utmost dedication to the project. A team venturing into a lot of different categories can jeopardize the reliability of a full-blown Formula 1 team. Even though, in the past, teams such as McLaren and Red Bull have had diversified activities. But F1 has arguably been their main priority. With the advent of Ford finding its way back into the sport since a 2004 hiatus, the American automobile giants find themselves at a similar crossroads.

At the Red Bull launch on the 3rd of February in New York, the Ford Motor Company announced that they will be returning to the sport in 2026. The details of the project are yet to be released comprehensively, but it has been dubbed as a technical partnership between Ford and Red Bull Powertrains, as the duo aims to build an F1 engine in conjunction. That being said, it would appear that Ford has taken one step in the right direction by claiming its focus to be diverted more toward F1 in the foreseeable future.

The new Le Mans Daytona Hybrid cars debuted at the 24hrs of Daytona earlier this year. The likes of BMW made a comeback to prototype racing with the new hybrid regulations. Given that even Ford has now shown interest in the electrification of racing, the company was touted to enter the prototype fray as well. However, that door has been firmly shut by CEO Jim Farley.

In an interview with Motor Trend, going against their promise, Farley said, “No, I don’t think we’re much into [racing] Prototypes at Ford.”

It would appear that with F1 now in the picture for Ford, they have their hands full. “IMSA and WEC prototypes would add an element of electrification but we’re very satisfied with the electrification, both [on the] technical and marketing [sides], we will have in WRC with the Puma hybrid and now in F1.”

The executive chairman of Ford, Bill Ford, was quoted by Formula1.com as saying, “This is the start of a thrilling new chapter in Ford’s motorsports story that began when my great-grandfather [Henry Ford] won a race that helped launch our company. Ford is returning to the pinnacle of the sport, bringing Ford’s long tradition of innovation, sustainability and electrification to one of the world’s most visible stages.”
