Former Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo revealed that he would re-sign Sebastian Vettel if given the chance. Vettel’s contract with the Scuderia concludes at the end of this year and he’s yet to announce any future decisions. However, many experts are calling for Ferrari to consider other options for 2021 and beyond.

There have been many rumors regarding Vettel’s Ferrari contract. The rumor mill reported that Ferrari offered Vettel a 1-year deal with reduced pay, which the German refused. Allegedly, Vettel wants a multi-year contract with a salary that matches his previous contract. According to several reports, Ferrari is considering 3 potential replacements for Vettel’s seat, if talks completely fail.

Allegedly, Ferrari is keeping an eye on Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz, and Antonio Giovinazzi as possible replacements. While the three choices aren’t bad by any means, Ferrari needs team stability in the current situation, making Vettel the perfect choice.

The 4 times World Champion is familiar with Ferrari’s working and its expectations. Additionally, he brings in a sense of calm and solidity that Ferrari needs to function at a higher level. Given the fact that regulations won’t be changing for next year, Ferrari can take a gamble on a Vettel and Leclerc pairing rather than venturing into the unknown.

Montezemolo backs Vettel
Montezemolo heaped praise on the German driver and said that he would renew Vettel’s contract if given the opportunity. Speaking to Il Resto del Carlino, Luca said:
“Seb is still very fast, he has a lot of experience and I don’t think he is in a crisis of motivation,”

“In addition, his presence would also be useful to Leclerc, who is very talented but must confirm himself at the top after a splendid season and therefore will have a lot more pressure on him.”
