There are no prizes for naming the team who had the most disastrous season last year. Even though Ferrari finished sixth, considering their reputation and history, it was quite poor. However, they did show signs of improvement at the Bahrain GP.

Former Renault team boss, Flavio Briatore, does not question the team of the progress they made over the winter. Both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz displayed their own driving prowess too as they finished inside the top 10. It sees them competing with McLaren for the third-place crown in the constructor’s standings.

Hence, this progress sees Vice-President Piero Ferrari dreaming of a race victory this season. However, Briatore has somewhat brought him back to the earth with his assessment. He believes even a podium could be out of their reach, in normal circumstances.

“Ferrari will attack, but it will be difficult for them to get on the podium when all the cars finish.”

But, the Italian outfit has two of the best drivers on the grid as part of their lineup. Though the SF21 limits them from showcasing their true potential behind the wheel of an F1 car.

“Ferrari still has opportunities to improve. With Sainz and Leclerc you have two great drivers who both did a good job, there is nothing to be said, but they are still restricted by the car,” said Briatore.

If the performance in Bahrain had the Tifosi dreaming of more, we must stop them right there. It is because Ferrari won’t focus much on this season. Due to the incoming technical regulations, their priority still remains 2022 to try to get back to the top.

“We know that we will not work much on the development of that car because we will focus on the 2022 in terms of design development. I am pretty sure it is the same with the other competitors,” said Team Principal Mattia Binotto.

And no one can blame Binotto for having this approach. It does not make any sense to try to catch Mercedes and Red Bull within this season. Rather, it is important to keep developing the power unit until the end of this season when the freeze sets in.
