Consistency is key in the world of Formula 1. That being said, the weight of expectations and the media chatter around you can oftentimes get the better of you. Lewis Hamilton dominated the world of Formula 1 racing for over half a decade with Mercedes. But as it is with all good things, it must end. The 7x Champion’s fall from grace was spectacular, first he lost his crown in 2021, and then, he was brought to his knees by F1’s new regulations in 2022. However, through all of it, it seems he’s taken a valuable lesson in life that’ll help forge his path to glory once again. But having been through it all, it would appear he has a few words of wisdom for his arch-rival, Max Verstappen.

2022 was a humbling year for the Brit. After being in championship-winning machinery for the better part of his career, he was strapped into a car that could only get him a 6th place finish in the final driver standings. However, after everything is said and done, he sat down and introspected on his year with philosophical vigor.

He was quoted by Bild, as saying, “We had so many successes before that it felt a little empty. We won, but we had expected it. That’s weird, because it’s actually such a great thing.” He may have then taken a moment to reflect on his illustrious career. Because then, he said something that can only be taken as a word of caution for the dominant champ Verstappen.
“I know how hard it is to be at the top and stay there.”
Even though 2022 may have gotten the better of Hamilton, he hasn’t shown his intentions to quit. That being said, in the past, he’s been more than forthcoming in explaining exactly when he plans to hang his helmet up. This time, he’s delved into that aspect a bit more.

Talking to media including RacingNews365.com, he said, “I think, each year, you have to ask yourself, are you willing to give as much – if not more – than you did when you first started? Are you willing to give up all the time to prepare and train and work with the team and deliver?”
“If there’s ever a moment that I’m arriving and I’m just coasting along, then that’s when I don’t personally belong here and don’t deserve a position here, and that’s when I should stop. [So] I question myself whether I’m able to do [those things], and do I want to do [them], and the answer is yes.”
