The British GP packed a lot of action for F1 fans. Some of the happenings were usual while some caught everyone off guard. Both the Ferraris trumping Lewis Hamilton at his home GP in Qualifying was unusual. But everything felt normal again when Ferrari messed up their strategy and Hamilton got his 14th podium at Silverstone. Charles Leclerc was very unhappy with Ferrari, yet again spoiling his race.

This time around, Leclerc was not only on the receiving end of the repercussions of a poor Ferrari strategy, but also bad luck. The team pitted the Monegasque for Hards in Lap 19 of the race, attempting an undercut on George Russell. But in Lap 33, Kevin Magnussen brought out the Safety after stopping his fiery Haas on the track. And that spoiled Ferrari’s race.

Leclerc did acknowledge that they got unlucky with the Safety car but that was not their main problem. Leclerc said, as quoted by f1i.autojournal, “I was a bit surprised. I don’t know if Russell’s radio says he’s doing the opposite of us, if that’s the case that’s probably why we stopped. Of course, it wasn’t optimal after that, especially since there was the safety car at the worst possible time, but the problem was mainly our lack of pace.”

The 2023 season is almost half done and Ferrari hasn’t made any significant progress. Mercedes too has been inconsistent, but at least their game plan is on point, unlike Ferrari’s. And if that was not enough, McLaren has leapfrogged both teams in terms of pace, both in Qualifying and the Race. In the post-race interview with Sky Sports, the Monegasque driver accentuated the developments by their rivals.

“We didn’t have much degradation, just the pace of the car wasn’t there,” said Leclerc. “We were struggling in the first part of the race. On the first stint, Mercedes and McLaren were really quick, Mercedes on the softs with George Russell was very fast.”
