George Russell Admits He’s Still Far Away From Lewis Hamilton & Max Verstappen

Some F1 talents come through the ranks and make the most of their opportunities by showing they belong in the sport. Mercedes academy graduate George Russell is certainly one of them.
The 2020 season became a bit of a breakthrough campaign for him. Although he majorly drove for Williams, the 22-year-old got a glorious opportunity to race for Mercedes in place of Lewis Hamilton in the Sakhir GP.
Naturally, he grabbed the chance with both hands. He showed the Mercedes management he can become the heir to one of their cockpits. Not just from a racecraft perspective, but also with his positive attitude and calm personality.

Russell explained his demeanor during practices, qualifying sessions, and races. He believes that more than anybody else’s praise or criticism, he himself is his biggest critic.

Speaking in an interview, Russell stated, “I’m honest with myself, I know when there’s a bit more time in there.”
“When I watch a lap of Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen and I see what they’re achieving, I know if I’ve managed to do similar or if I’m a bit away from them. I’m my biggest critic.

Since his championship-winning season in the F2 division, Russell has not had much success in the premier motorsport league. Despite the eventual heartbreak, his points finish in Sakhir meant a lot more to him and his fans.

Russell’s talent and attitude means he could become Mercedes’ next big star
The young Briton has already earned appreciation from the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, and for good reason as well. Many pundits and fans have also taken to him and believe he has a bright future in Formula 1.
Despite being a backmarker with Williams, Russell leaves no stone unturned in his efforts to extract maximum performance. His adaptability and willingness to polish his skills are undoubtedly his biggest strengths.

Hence, it may not be before long that Russell makes the big jump to the mighty Mercedes team. Although one does not know what the future holds for him, he is certainly laying the right foundation to become F1’s next big superstar.
