In the spicy world of Formula 1, it isn’t just the engines that generate heat – sometimes, it’s the cheeky banter among friends! Recently, Alex Albon, in his ever-jovial style, decided to playfully prod George Russell. Amid a joint interview with Formula 1’s YouTube channel, which featured the 2019 rookies including Lando Norris, Albon cheekily inquired about Mercedes’ standing in the championship.

Previously Alex, Lando & George have done such an activity back in their debut year. So the banter between this trio has always been pretty harmless & fun. On hearing Russell’s proud confirmation of Mercedes’ P2 spot – currently 20 points clear of Ferrari – Albon couldn’t resist a playful jab.

“Lewis must be doing a good job,” quipped Albon, causing chuckles all around. Russell, though slightly roasted, took it on the chin. “To be fair, he is well ahead of me in the Championship this year,” he admitted, referencing a season he’s termed as a “complete disaster” on the personal front.

While Russell may be trailing Hamilton by a sizable 75 points and finds himself in P8 following some heart-wrenching mishaps – like that Singapore crash (oh, the drama!) – he remains loyal to the team’s cause. His eyes are firmly set on ensuring Mercedes retains that coveted P2 spot.

Just beyond the lighthearted banters and locker room talk, there lurks a storm of concerns and finger-pointing that paints a similar yet different picture of the season.

George Russell points finger at Mercedes, but can he turn the season around?

Russell, currently 75 points behind team phenom Lewis Hamilton, has thrown a spanner in the works by blaming Mercedes for his less-than-ideal season. Now, before we get our gears in a twist, let’s break down the drama, lap by lap. Last year, Russell was the new darling of the tracks, leaving behind the shadow of Williams and zooming past Hamilton by a whole 30 points. Pundits everywhere had an eye on him, some even whispered of him being the ‘next big thing’. Flash forward to this year, Hamilton’s roaring back in true champion style, reminding everyone (especially Russell) that he’s not so easily left in the rearview mirror.

Now, if you’re imagining a sulking Russell, you’re not far off. In a recent candid chat (as per soymotor.com), the young Brit expressed his belief that 2023 has been, performance-wise, the “best season of [his] life”. Pointing fingers (and not the thumbs-up kind) at the Mercedes beast beneath him, he believes the car’s lack of speed compared to last year’s model is the main culprit. He recounted his woes from engine failures in Melbourne to almost-tasting-podium-glory at Zandvoort before the rain decided to play spoilsport.

Though to be fair, Russell does admit to a couple of oopsie-daisies on his part in Singapore and Canada. And yes, we feel for him when he says, “This year it was quite clear from the beginning that we were not going to fight for the championship,” and that maybe, just maybe, it affected his mindset.

So, as the engines rev up for the next race, remember – the real fun sometimes happens off the tracks! See you at the Qatar Grand Prix!
