George Russell Confirms Alex Albon’s Statement: “He Made My Career”

George Russell is arguably the most sought-after talent in Formula One right now. The young Brit impressed everyone with his talent and skills during his time with Williams from 2019 to 2021. His performances in Williams helped him secure a seat with Mercedes for the 2022 season alongside Lewis Hamilton.

In a Motorsport Magazine Podcast, Russell replied to the claims made by Alex Albon that the former Red Bull driver helped him in his junior career. George recognized the fact that Alex was the driver to beat in karting.

” That is a memory that has passed by on me, but I do recall. So, in Trepid Driver Program was a team a manufacturer in go-karting in that between 2010 and 2013, they were the team to be with. And they would do these days of assessment of a lot of drivers. Alex was their driver at the time.

I arrived, they did a bit of an assessment. How do you fare against the world champion at the time, Alex Albon? So, he made my career,said Russell.

I remember George Russell was this young, young kid: Albon

Alex Albon, on the same podcast, had previously mentioned that he was the one who picked out George Russell. He stated he was the reference driver in karting and would help select younger drivers.

“I was the reference driver/ the one who they’d ask: ‘who should we choose for next year?’ I remember George was this young, young kid. We’re the same height now, but back then, he was much shorter than I was. I think Charles joined later in the year, but George was already the quick one out of the guys.

Everyone else I could just pull away and drive away but George.. he’s keeping up,” said Alex.

It is interesting to learn that both drivers have helped each other in their careers. It would be lovely to have both drivers racing each other again in F1 in 2022.
