George Russell Sets Mercedes F1 a Deadline for Prospective 2022 Deal

George Russell will be the center of attraction come transfer season in June. Everyone expects him to join Mercedes for the 2022 season, replacing Valtteri Bottas. Russell also wants to sign the next season’s contract as soon as possible.
The Williams driver has put in stellar performances this season and impressed everyone with his driving. He has qualified in Q2 in all six races this season. The young Brit has also impressed 2-time world champion, Fernando Alonso.
Whilst talking about his future in F1, Russell mentioned that he was keen to set out for his future as soon as possible. George is one of the prime contenders for the Mercedes seat in 2022. Both the seats would be up for grabs as Lewis and Valtteri have not signed for 2022 yet.

“This season is intense, not messing around with contracts”- George Russell
According to Formula1.com, Russell wants to focus on this season and not think about 2022 and contract talks. Russell said, “I think we’d all want a nice summer break off when the season’s this intense, not messing around with contracts!
“I haven’t really spoken about it [with Toto], that’s always just been my mindset [to conclude the talks quickly], It’s in everyone’s best interest.

“I’m just focused on the here and now really, but I’m sure everything will be sorted no later than the end of the summer break really,”said Russell.
Toto Wolff, Mercedes Team Principal, who is also close to Russell, wants to sort the contracts of their drivers earlier than last season.
Wolff said, “We don’t want to leave it until January to confirm the two drivers… also, to give the driver peace of mind, or be able to concentrate on the job.
“Obviously for next year, there’s lots of balls in the air and we will always try to do the best for the team long-term, while also giving total loyalty to our current driver line-up.
“We are not doubting either Valtteri or Lewis, but discussions obviously are going to happen–but not in January next year,” said Wolff.

Will George Russell finally sign with Mercedes in 2022?
George Russell got an opportunity to drive for Mercedes at Sakhir Grand Prix. He qualified 2nd and put on a mature drive on race day, coming close to winning the race. Since then, he has impressed Williams with his qualifying pace.

George Russell looks like a natural successor at Mercedes if the champions decide to replace their current lineup. The Brit will be in a prime position, he just needs to keep putting in good performances and gain more experience.
