“It never rains it pours,” at Haas according to the Former Team Principal Guenther Steiner. The team has been consistent with their place on the grid, but sadly, it’s always been close to last. The team only had one year where the owner Gene Haas saw an improvement in 2018, and ever since then, it’s been downhill.

Guenther Steiner has served the team for almost a decade, starting in 2014, and had a goal to make it one of the most competitive teams on the grid. But as we know now, that plan didn’t work for Haas or Steiner as the team decided to replace the principal with Ayao Komatsu. In the aftermath of the decision, Netflix’s Drive to Survive reveals how Steiner did not have a good run with Haas.

Drive to Survive is where Guenther Steiner has emerged as one of the most favorite team principals in the sport. The former principal of Haas is known for his colorful language and funny antics, and that can be clearly seen in the docuseries. In episode 4 of Drive to Survive, Steiner is heading to record an audiobook version of his published “Survive to Drive.” The book is a wordplay on the show that put him in the spotlight, and while it is whimsical, it goes into the 58-year-old mind while managing Haas for his final season.

While recording the Audiobook, Steiner told Netflix, “It probably won’t surprise many people that I’m starting my book with a swear word. But all I can say is, thank fu*k the season is over.” He explained, “We had a few difficult years, the darkest years at Haas.” But what caught the attention of many was when he spoke about drinking. Steiner said, I don’t drink very much, but this year, I’ve been tempted to take it up professionally. Whiskey on a fu*king drip. That’s what I needed sometimes.” While the reaction might seem extreme, the Italian is known to make a humorous situation out of a serious one.

Although it’s common knowledge that Steiner is no longer with Haas, he said, “This year (2023), we have to prove that we can do better than being at the back of the field. Otherwise, it’s no point to be here. What I would do is look for another job.” And it looks like he just found one.
