Lewis Hamilton recently clinched his seventh world championship title in Formula 1, equaling the legend, Michael Schumacher. However, despite the incredible feat, Lewis opined that quite a lot of people are claiming he was “just lucky.”

Speaking to AutoMotorundSport, Lewis expressed his views on working with the engineers to grow into a better driver. “You have to be at the helm to steer this group of smart, determined, and creative people in a direction of development so that at some point the car and the driver harmonize perfectly,” he said.

Lewis also went on to contradict the fact that better cars can help drivers produce better results and felt that there’s more to it.

“As a young driver, you don’t understand how Michael Schumacher was able to put such a successful package on wheels with Ferrari at the time. Or how I now with Mercedes. Half believe that I’m just lucky enough to be in a good car,” he said.

Lewis always maintained his respect for the Mercedes crew through his eight years with the team. The healthy relationship between them definitely helped Mercedes produce better results each year.

Lewis Hamilton reveals how he guided his engineers to develop his car

The Briton opened up that his occasional discussions with his team engineers helped them figure out the right direction to develop fast cars.

“I meet with my team on average every week to discuss the situation,” he said. “At my request, this group was enlarged. I also always know in which direction we are going with the next car.”

Lewis’s high level of understanding of the car meant that the engineers never had second thoughts in developing the car towards Lewis’s desired path.

“Every now and then I had to tell them; This is not our problem. This direct conversation was more and more important to me. I didn’t want to hear secondhand what the aerodynamicists were planning. Too much is lost there,” he said.

Overall, his approach towards handling his crew turned out to be a good thing. This wasn’t just true for himself, but for the team as well. His presence in Mercedes is definitely a huge boost to the engineers. Hence, Mercedes have enjoyed a dominant run to this point.
