“Has He Done Something?” – David Coulthard Puzzled on Why Lewis Hamilton Hasn’t Been Knighted Yet

Lewis Hamilton is a phenomenal driver, there’s no doubt about it. The Briton won a record-breaking 92nd Grand Prix in Portugal and will certainly go down as probably one of the greatest F1 drivers ever.

However, despite his ridiculous amount of success, Hamilton has not yet received the honor of being knighted. This question has puzzled even former F1 driver David Coulthard.

While speaking to BBC Radio 5, Coulthard was asked if Hamilton deserves to get the same level of recognition as tennis star Andy Murray.  The two-time Wimbledon winner was knighted in 2016 for his services to tennis and charity.

Coulthard said, “100%. I don’t understand why so many world championships into his career (he hasn’t been awarded knighthood).

“He is a global ambassador for Britain.

“We’ve got a true world championship in Formula 1. We’ve got Lewis there, proudly holding the Union Jack above his head. Everywhere and every time he has the opportunity to do so,” he added.

“So, does anyone know a reason why – has he done something that would make him not acceptable under the current regulations to knight him?

“Because I think he deserves it more than some others.”

Perhaps with his world record 92nd victory, knighthood may be around the corner. If not that, then surely a 7th championship title will be a cause for knighthood, won’t it?

Or maybe they are waiting for him to notch up his 8th championship title and break Michael Schumacher’s record. After all, you wouldn’t really deny the possibility of that happening too soon either.

Coulthard is one among many whom Hamilton has impressed big time. The Mercedes ace’s focus, determination, hunger and ability to block out criticism is what Coulthard finds “Remarkable.”

The 13 time race winner said, “I know how much energy it took for me to get to get to whatever level was my best achievement. And it was exhausting. That’s what made me want to stop. I was just tired.

Furthermore, he said, “I think it is remarkable the way he manages himself. To be able to turn up, deliver at that level, be in the public eye constantly, to be criticized, and somehow he still manages to come back refreshed and do it all again.”

You can bet Hamilton won’t be resting easy on his laurels. He’ll be back out in Imola, on the 1st of October, looking for his 93rd win. That would take him one more step closer to yet another title.
