Lewis Hamilton has not won a single race in 2022. That, in itself, is a shocking fact for the man who holds the record for the most victorious and the number of world championships in Formula 1. As a new era of the sport was introduced in 2022, team Mercedes, who dominated for a decade, has arguably taken a step back.

The W-13 has struggled to match front-runners Ferrari and Red Bull. Former racing driver Christian Danner believes the fault lies with Toto Wolff and not Hamilton. The Mercedes boss recently called the car a s***box after the Brit struggled physically in Baku because of the porpoising issue.

Danner, however, is impressed with the seven-time world champion’s performances despite only finishing on the podium twice. In the program Sport & Talk from Hangar 7, he said, “Let me put it this way, Hamilton has already been written off by many people, especially the journalists, but only on Hamilton can it still be done!” (Translated using Google)

“It’s the same as with other top drivers, he needs his car. If he doesn’t come along, it’s Toto Wolff’s fault. He is responsible for delivering a good car. If you compare it, the Mercedes certainly can’t come close to Ferrari and Red Bull at the moment.”

However, they have shown improvement in Canada, where the bouncing effect was evidently less. Hamilton finally ended his podium drought as he will hope to build on this result.

Is the porpoising issue finally behind Lewis Hamilton and Co?

Mercedes has had mixed results this year. The start of the year saw several cars suffer porpoising. However, the Silver Arrows seemed to have struggled the most with this issue.

After their upgrades in Spain, the team believed this problem was solved. However, in the bumpy street circuit of Monaco and Baku, the oscillating effect returned and, as a result, Hamilton endured severe back pain. Nevertheless, the Canadian GP marked an improvement, so Wolff is confident that the issues are finally behind them.

He stated, “I think in a way we have dissected what we define as porpoising or bouncing, and it is that the porpoising, which is the aerodynamic movement of the car, I think that’s solved and we got on top of this around Barcelona.”
