“He Was a Good Politician”: Ex-Teammate Reveals Fernando Alonso’s Actual Side Which Could Be Valuable Lessons for Lance Stroll

At Aston Martin, fans are getting to see a new Fernando Alonso. It is not just the racecraft that looks more polished, but even the temperament which is cooler. While this seems to be new to everybody, Giancarlo Fisichella, his teammate at Renault in ’05 and ’06 says that Alonso’s actual side was never shown to the public.
During his 1st and longest stint in F1, most fans knew Fernando Alonso as being a hothead. Despite having such a reputation, he won 2 World Championships with Renault in 2005 and 2006. His then-teammate at Renault, Fisichella also contributed to Renault winning the constructors’ championships those 2 years. Speaking on F1’s official podcast, ‘Beyond The Grid’, Fisichella lauded Alonso for the championships. He also pointed out how Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll can benefit from the Spaniard’s interpersonal skills.
Fisichella said, as quoted by Formulapassion.it, “He was strong in all circumstances: with little grip, with a lot of grip, in the rain. In the race he was consistent, focused, he made little mistakes. He was good at communicating with the team and was also a skilled politician, but that’s part of the job. It was really strong. In the team he had a strong position.”

Fernando Alonso’s last victory in F1 was at the 2013 Spanish GP. Since then, he has been on the podium several times, but not at the top of the podium. The 10-year drought can come to an end this year, believes Fisichella. And that can only happen if Aston Martin provides him with a “good car”.
Ever since Aston Martin has given an opportunity to Alonso to fight with the frontrunners, it has been a dream run of podiums for him. Fisichella said, “For me Fernando [is in] one of the best moments of his career and he can win a few races this year with a good car.”
