As this season has progressed, the championship battle between Mercedes and Red Bull has only become more fierce. Along with that, Helmut Marko, advisor to Red Bull, has also increased the frequency of his comments about their rivals.

Marko suggested that the German team is using their army of customer teams against Red Bull. The Austrian claims if Mercedes themselves won’t make the cut, it will use McLaren and Aston Martin to cause harm to the team from Milton Keynes.

“If it doesn’t come from Mercedes itself, then a team that is close to Mercedes will be put forward,” Marko said, as reported in Motorsport.

Helmut Marko on the ‘flexi wings’ of Mercedes

Ever since the weekend in Brazil, the biggest talk of the F1 paddock has been Mercedes’ pace. And its only natural that their championship rivals, Red Bull have been the ones to lead the discourse, pointing towards what are in their opinion, illegal practices.

It seems that Red Bull has zeroed in on the rear wing of Mercedes as the sole and only factor behind its superior performance. Marko refers to them as ‘flexi wings’, something their rivals came up with when they began to realise they’re trailing behind.

He said, “When Mercedes saw that we were equal or even faster, they first came up with flexi wings and then with all kinds of other false arguments.”

Marko explains that Red Bull considers those actions as ‘unsportsmanlike’ and have since been keeping a laser-sharp focus on their rivals. He reasons that since Mercedes aren’t used to being challenged and since Red Bull has put up such a strong challenge, everything ‘adds up’.

As the season is coming to a close, the intensity and excitement are reaching new limits for fans and teams alike.

However, one can only imagine what the state of the Red Bull garage would be like if, God forbid, a McLaren or an Aston Martin crashed into a Red Bull or worse – if Mercedes rear wing held under pressure.
