Mercedes comeback into F1 shook the whole order of Formula One racing. Since the Brackley-based outfit returned, it has swept all other teams off their feet. They have won an astounding 6 consecutive constructors’ championships. They also have a driver, who may be the greatest this sport has ever seen, by the time he retires. One would wonder, that to purchase a team that had just won an F1 title, the Daimler group would have had to pay a huge amount to buy the team, right? Wrong!

According to Forbes, the Daimler group has just recently revealed that they purchased a majority stake in Brawn GP for only $175.7 million. That is pretty cheap considering all the accolades that the team has won since 2014. That number becomes even more baffling when you realize that they bought out a Brawn GP team that had just won the championship. Brilliant bit of business isn’t it? Brawn GP only participated in one F1 season which it won in 2009. It was rather unsurprisingly powered by a Mercedes engine. After that year, it was announced that Mercedes were partnering with Abu Dhabi-based Aabar Investments to buy a 75.1% stake in Brawn GP. Mercedes got a 45.1 % stake for $98.5 million while Aabar got 30%. As a result of that and a sponsorship deal with Petronas, the team was renamed as Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.

Later in 2011 Mercedes and Aabar purchased the remaining 24.9% stake. That purchase bolstered Mercedes’ stake to 60% for an added cost of $25.5 million. Furthermore, in 2012 they purchased the remaining 40% stake from Aabar investments for a total of $51.7 million. So finally, by the beginning of 2013, the Brackley-based outfit owned 100% stake for a grand total cost of $175.7 million.

In August 2013 they did sell a total of 40% stake to F1 legend Niki Lauda and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. Fast-forward to one year later, Mercedes’ utter domination in F1 had begun. That domination still continues to this day. With the 2020 season soon to begin, we’ll find out if the Silver Arrows Juggernaut continues to break records.
