Here’s Why the Disastrous Ferrari Strategy Blunders are a Blessing in Disguise for F1

Statistically, Ferrari is the most successful team in F1. However, in recent years, their poor strategies and bad radio calls have given rise to many running jokes among the fans. Moreover, these mess-ups have become some of the most interesting points of conversation for the F1 community.

In a recent statistic by cloud-based software company Salesforce, F1 social media sees the most interactions when Ferrari have a tough time.

The Austrian GP saw the most Twitter conversations when Carlos Sainz had his engine failure and when Charles Leclerc took the win.

Similarly, the French GP saw fans take to social media in the masses when Charles Leclerc had his crash. While the Hungarian GP had the fans conversing on social media when Ferrari botched Charles Leclerc’s strategy-making him stop for a third time. The races in Spain, Monaco, Azerbaijan, Canada, and the UK follow the same trends.

These constant errors by Ferrari have drawn tons of eyes towards the sport, which could be a blessing in disguise for F1. And like they say, there is no such thing as bad publicity.

What did Ferrari do wrong at the Hungarian GP?

The Hungarian GP saw Ferrari make another blunder, sabotaging their own race. The team picked a peculiar two-stop combination, putting Charles Leclerc on medium, medium, and then the hard compound. This coupled with a cooler track temperature this weekend saw the strategy not work out as intended.

Leclerc was in dismay with his tires as he pit from second and dropped all the way to P6. This further damaged Charles Leclerc’s already dwindling title hopes. The Monegasque also blamed the strategy for his struggles. He said, “the last part of the race where it was a disaster for me, especially the hard–that’s why I lost the race basically.”

However, the summer break potentially comes at the perfect time for Ferrari, allowing them to re-energize and refresh ahead of the season restart in Belgium. They will have to bring their A-game and cut out the errors if they hope to have a shot at sneaking away the title from Red Bull.

Additionally, this might also give Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc a sniff of the driver’s title, which looks to be going Max Verstappen’s way.
