“He’s in the World of Fashion, Wearing Strange Clothes”: Lewis Hamilton’s Greatest Rival Exposes the Lonely Reality of the Pariah in the F1 Paddock

Lewis Hamilton burst into the scene as a rookie in 2007 at McLaren with a world champion as a teammate. As we’re all aware, becoming an F1 World Champion takes a sizeable effort. However, in his rookie season, Hamilton almost achieved the impossible and finished the season only one point behind the 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen.
As both Hamilton and two-time world champion teammate Fernando Alonso finished on equal footing with 109 points, Hamilton possibly earned some discontentment from his teammate’s side of the garage. Adding to this, the following season, Alonso ended his ties with McLaren.

It seems there might be some friction still between the two, with Alonso candidly speaking about Hamilton. The Alpine turned Aston Martin driver discussed the Mercedes man along with members of his family.
When asked, “Do you have a connection with him (Hamilton)?”
Alonso replies, “Not much, he’s not having any relationship with anyone. He isolated himself in the last few years. He’s in the world of fashion, wearing strange clothes.”

The comment showcases his stance on Hamilton as the Spaniard candidly speaks his mind. Their rivalry has been evident in some races as well. Although when Hamilton was asked about the rivalry recently, the Briton had an interesting take.

Your teammate is your biggest rival, such is the nature of Formula 1 as a sport. After Hamilton’s arrival, this is exactly what became of him and Alonso. Despite the rivalry, Hamilton still has massive respect for Alonso.
When asked about his toughest opponent, Hamilton said, “So I would say out of pure pace I think… I always say [my toughest opponent] is Fernando and his ability.”
