Nico Rosberg had to pull the rabbit out of his magic hat to beat Lewis Hamilton during the 2016 F1 season. Rosberg was technically excellent and took advantage of that. The German knew what it would take to beat a driver like Hamilton. Carlos Sainz has now been asked to take a page out of Oscar Piastri’s book if he wants to beat Charles Leclerc. Carlos Sainz left McLaren at the end of the 2020 season and partnered Charles Leclerc at Ferrari from 2021 onwards. Whilst 2021 was a good year for Sainz finishing 5.5 points ahead of Leclerc, the Monegasque stepped up and finished 62 points ahead and P2 in the standings. Although there is no doubt that Carlos Sainz is a fast driver, Charles Leclerc is the No.1 Ferrari driver for a reason.

The Spaniard needs to pull up his socks if he wants to beat Charles Leclerc this season. The Monegasque has had terrible luck once again this season and hence is P7 in the standings. Peter Windsor suggested that Oscar Piastri is trying to close the gap down to Lando Norris. And it can be seen in his performances. Windsor explained that Sainz does not have the will to learn from Charles Leclerc and look at where the Monegasque is doing better than he is.

According to Peter Windsor’s YouTube video, he said, “It’s astounding to me that a lot of drivers who don’t have the Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton short corner ability, don’t look for ways to try and close that gap. I think Oscar Piastri is trying to do that and we know Sergio Perez is starting to realize that he’s doing something different from Max. But that’s probably about it. I don’t think Carlos Sainz is thinking I need to really… He’s probably thinking that I’m getting better and better and I’m going to have Charles. But he’s not thinking about what Charles is doing really well that I can learn from. I bet he’s not thinking that.”

Oscar Piastri has really done well as a rookie this season. The slow McLaren is really not showcasing how well the Australian is doing compared to the super-quick Lando Norris. The Briton only had praise for the Australian. However, Piastri believes he still can improve, especially in one aspect.

Lando Norris qualified P3 for the Spanish GP. Whilst Oscar Piastri qualified P9, he believed the car had the pace to qualify around the Top 5 spot. Nevertheless, as Piastri’s qualifying pace keeps getting close to Norris, the Australian explained how he still needs to work on his race days and improve on his race craft and race pace.

According to motorsport-total, Oscar Piastri said, “I think at the moment it’s just about getting a little bit faster on the race weekends. When it comes to qualifying, especially in recent races, the performance has been quite comparable to Lando [Norris].”
