During the press conference before the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Formula 1 journalist Walter Koster delivered an all-time great moment for the history books. Yes, that question which he asked about the increasing technical complications that are making it less and less easy to drive an F1 car.

Koster had referenced Niki Lauda’s comments about how even a trained monkey could drive an F1 car because it was that easy back then.

Lauda’s comments were from “30 years ago” and Koster’s question was almost 10 years ago. But now it seems what the great Austrian claimed has indeed come true.

Recently, a video of a trained monkey driving what appears to be a golf cart is going viral on Instagram. What’s even more amazing is that this video is edited and synced with the sounds of a Formula 1 car, and even a lap-time graphic.

And obviously, the caption on that video is of Koster’s infamous question.

Naturally, the comments on this post added to the already high funny quotient of this video.

One user wrote, “On the hard tyres too, that’s impressive.” Another wrote, “Bono my bananas are gone.”

“He missed the Ape-X,” read one hilarious comment. And one user commented, “Fastest lap with hard compound. Monke is a legend.”

A quick view back to the most iconic question in Formula 1 history

In the press conference, Walter Koster began,

“Gentlemen, a short view back to the past. Thirty years ago, Niki Lauda told us ‘take a monkey, place him into the cockpit and he is able to drive the car.’ Thirty years later, Sebastian told us ‘I had to start my car like a computer, it’s very complicated.’ And Nico Rosberg said that during the race–I don’t remember what race – he pressed the wrong button on the wheel.”

Koster continued,

“Question for you both: is Formula 1 driving today too complicated, with twenty and more buttons on the wheel? Are you too much under effort, under pressure? What are your wishes for the future concerning the technical program during the race? Less buttons, more? Or less and more communication with your engineers?”

Well, reality is indeed stranger than fiction or imagination. What’s left now is for Formula 1 to give that monkey a chance in a test. After all, he put in all purple sectors on hard tires.

Would you like to see ‘Monke’ get a chance in an F1 car?
