Formula 1’s annual summer break commenced a week ago. With team factories on a mandated close for two weeks, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff is using the downtime away from F1 to spend quality time with his wife, Susie Wolff, and their son, Jack. For adrenaline junkies like Toto and Susie, who’ve been associated with F1 and motorsport for quite a while now, what better way to spend their holiday than by engaging in another adrenaline-filled sport? What was it? Downhill mountain biking.

Susie Wolff posted a series of pictures on her Instagram that led up to the final one with Toto and Jack walking hand in hand, but what stood out was Toto’s left arm wrapped in a cast. Susie’s caption for the post explained what happened as she wrote, “Action-packed start to the summer holidays. Last picture shows how the downhill mountain biking ended for Toto… 🫤”

While disaster struck Toto, Susie and their son seemed to have come out unscathed. In the first picture of the post, Susie is on a bike with Jack on her tail in his own bike. With racing basically a part of her bloodstream—and Toto’s—there’s no doubt Jack is just as inclined to race as she is. We could almost be sure the picture was followed by a high-speed descent on their bikes.

With her post, Susie told the world how a cycling mishap led Toto to endure a cast around his arm. But this isn’t the first time she—or Toto, for that matter—has been in this situation.

Susie Wolff was on “nurse duty” for Toto Wolff in 2014

If there’s one word that would describe what Toto Wolff’s 2023 has been like so far, it’s unlucky. After a disappointing first half of the season for him and Mercedes, his summer break got just as bumpy. The silver lining is that he won’t have to walk into the paddock after the summer break with a cast on his arm like he had to in 2014. But what happened back then?

Prior to the last race before the 2014 summer break (at the Hungarian GP), Wolff and a few Mercedes team personnel were involved in a cycling pile-up as they cycled along the Danube River. Wolff sustained a fracture to his right wrist, elbow, collarbone, and shoulder. He even had a metal disc inserted into his wrist, which made Susie nickname him “Totonator,” in reference to the Terminator. She posted a picture of him on Twitter, captioning it, “My husband the hero! 😊 As we know, boys will be boys… Looks like I am on nurse duty for the next few weeks!”

What do you think Jack, Toto, and Susie Wolff would be up to next?
