After encountering some horrible luck during the season opener, where they finished with zero points, Red Bull bounced back well at the Styrian Grand Prix. Max Verstappen finished on the podium in P3 while his teammate Alex Albon crossed the finish line in P4.

The result means that Red Bull are now third in the Constructors’ championship standings.

Despite the result, the time differential between the Red Bull and the Mercedes doesn’t paint a rosy picture. Max Verstappen even alluded to the fact that the team were much slower on the straights as compared to the Silver Arrows.

Luckily though, the next race is taking place at Hungary, a track known more for its twists and turns rather than its straights. This fact will give Red Bull boss, Christian Horner, the belief that they can go toe to toe with the W11’s.

Red Bull boss claims that they are just as good as Mercedes when it comes to speed in corners

According to Autosport, the Red Bull Team Principal thinks that the RB16 is at par with the W11 when it comes to corners.

He said, “Their straight-line speed is impressive. (However), there is not much there in cornering speed. There are some corners we are better, some where we are not quite as good.”

Nevertheless, he lauds Mercedes for improving their straight-line speed, which he witnessed to his team’s detriment in Austria.

He said, “Certainly on this track (Spielberg) their straight-line speed has been very impressive so they’ve made a good step over the winter.”

Even Chief Engineer Paul Monaghan thinks that the RB16 will perform better at the Hungaroring. He said, “Hungary is a different sort of circuit, isn’t it? it’s got a trivial straight and lots of twisty bits. The speed of the corners is lower than this place (Spielberg).

“Who knows, we might be better there. So we’ll pick ourselves up, we’ll update the car as best we can and go there and try and give them a decent fight and hopefully beat them.”

Red Bull doesn’t have the greatest of records at the Hungaroring. In the last three seasons, they have only managed 49 points among both their drivers.

They’ll certainly be hoping to bolster that stat by the end of this weekend.
