Last season at the Brazilian Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz Jr ended McLaren’s podium drought. After Lewis Hamilton copped a penalty for a collision with Alex Albon, Sainz Jr earned his first F1 podium.

This year, he insists that none of his goals have changed and wants more podiums to add to his tally. Last year, McLaren looked really strong and will be aiming to keep the momentum in 2020.

Speaking to AS.com, he said, “The driver in me hasn’t changed much since that moment. I am still the same person as before and I still have the same goal. Of course, I have to laugh every time I see those pictures because it was a unique moment. To be there on stage with the team and all my friends, I would like to do that again.”

The only thing that the Spaniard could not experience was celebrating a maiden podium with the other drivers. The penalty only came long after Hamilton celebrated with Max Verstappen and another podium debutante, Pierre Gasly. Undeterred, Carlos Sainz invaded the empty podium along with his team.

Sainz Jr knows that every F1 year is important and he always takes that approach.
