Former F1 Driver Pascal Wehrlein was vividly angry about his crash with Nyck de Vries in the Formula E race and he didn’t seem to hold his feelings back.

Formula E’s defending champion Nyck de Vries finished his season at the 9 position in the driver’s championship with a series of poor fortune affecting his year. His teammate Stoffel Vandoorne, however, ended up winning the Championship.

The incident Wehrlein spoke about happened at Turn 1 when the duo was fighting for the 13th position. The incident saw Wehrlein having to stop later on that lap and De Vries pitting with suspension damage.

De Vries expectedly was found at fault for the incident and had to serve a retrospective 5-second time penalty, although he had to retire from the race after the 8-car collision.

“First of all, in the first incident he moved under braking in Turn 20,” said Wehrlein. “I had to lock all my tires and almost crashed and lost one or two positions due to that.”

A lap later, they collided into Turn 1 with what Wehrlein explained as an “over-optimistic” move into the Turn. The collision effectively took both Wehrlein and De Vries out of contention for having top points finish in the race. De Vries ended 9th while Wehrlein ended 10th in the Driver’s Championship.

A furious Wehrlein finally said, “I hope he doesn’t get to F1. F****** idiot!”

Wehrlein has been a part of 39 F1 races, mainly with Sauber. It was F1 Driver Charles Leclerc who eventually replaced him in his debut season in Formula 1.

Nyck de Vries is still hopeful about his F1 debut soon

For a while now, Nyck de Vries, aged 27, has been linked up with different F1 teams. This year, he even got to get on the track by driving for both Mercedes and Williams. His F1 hopes are currently on hold as he is already contractually bound to stay in Formula E for 2023 with a move to the Maserati programme.

De Vries, who was the Formula E champion the previous year, was disappointed with his own season. Lamenting about the season, De Vries said, “…we just didn’t really find our way and then we were on the backfoot, and it was just a snowball effect.”

When asked about a reaction to Wehrlein’s comments, Nyck told The Race that he wasn’t aware of what he said, but later added, “What can I say? Everyone is allowed to say what they want to say. Everyone is making a big deal of it but I don’t know.”
