Perhaps this is why Vettel did not shy away from the chance of coming back to race in Japan again. Referring to the four drivers alongside him in the FIA press conference – Fernando Alonso, Kevin Magnussen, Nicholas Latifi, and Yuki Tsunoda – Vettel said jokingly:

Maybe one of these guys, in one of the future races here, will feel a bit sick. I don’t wish them to feel so but I wouldn’t mind jumping back for a race at Suzuka at any time”

Asked whether he was being serious, the Aston Martin driver said: “About a one-race career in the future? Yeah.”

“If anybody is happy to sign up a driver for a single race – I’m sure these guys wouldn’t be happy to step aside – but it would be something I’d seriously consider.”

However, Verstappen managed to sneak past at the last moment, with Vettel ending the race at P8.

“[Verstappen and Hamilton] were both a lot quicker, especially towards the end,” said Vettel in post-race interviews. “I knew I needed a very good exit out of [Turn] 5. I was very quick on the way in, I had a little wobble on the way out, and Max obviously had a clean run.”

“They have a very high top speed, especially [in the] second part of this race. Then I was on the dirty side, I tried to defend, but he was able to brake a lot later.”
