Let’s just come forth and say it, the 2025 silly season started ahead of the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton started off the transfers with his deal with Ferrari to join them in 2025. Now there is one thing we know, there are many drivers that will be out of their contract after this season. Including 2-time world champion Fernando Alonso.

Currently, he is driving for Aston Martin and things are going smoothly for him. But for him to win the world championship again, he might need more. There are already rumors about Mercedes being interested in the Spaniard, however nothing is confirmed right now. So what will Fernando Alonso do? Will he stick with Aston Martin or move on?

So far, Alonso has not spoken about what he is doing in 2025. He is currently one of the oldest drivers on the grid and he is still pushing for a world champion title. He just has the passion and his internal youth pushes him through. In a recent episode of The Red Flags Podcast, Will Buxton came forth to talk about what he thinks Fernando Alonso will do after this season.

Buxton said, “If the nuclear button doesn’t get hit, I think the driver market stays pretty stable. I think Cecho probably stays at Red Bull with Max [Verstappen]. Fernando [Alonso] stays at Aston Martin because he’s not going to go to Mercedes, because Antonelli’s got that seat, and he’s not going to go to Red Bull.”

The rumored Mercedes has their rising star Kimi Antonelli stepping in to drive alongside George Russell when he is ready. But until then, the team needs a stand-in player, and Alonso is clearly anything but that. Buxton further explains, “So he stays at Aston Martin, and if he doesn’t stay at Aston Martin, then he retires. The only way it gets shaken up is if Max leaves Red Bull, and then the whole thing goes nuclear.”

Between retiring and staying in the same team, there is a lot for Alonso to consider. At this moment, any team would be happy to have him, but he is eventually going to run out of time. If the world championship is what he is after, he needs to figure out what’s best for him and how he will defeat Max Verstappen in a Red Bull. But will he stay with Aston Martin after this season?

Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin Verdict

Aston Martin team boss, Mike Krack, aims to make Fernando Alonso’s decision regarding his Formula 1 future “as difficult as possible” by providing him with the best possible car. Fernando Alonso, aged 42, is in a phase where he needs to decide whether he wants to continue in F1 or not. He mentioned that his first priority would be to discuss with Aston Martin, with whom he had a successful partnership in 2023.

Alonso also knows how attractive he is to other teams due to his status as a world champion and the uncertainty in the line-ups of teams like Red Bull and Mercedes for 2025. Krack mentioned that there have been discussions with Alonso, and the situation remains unchanged since the last race in Saudi Arabia.

While Krack believes Alonso’s decision is more personal, he also acknowledges that Aston Martin’s performance could influence it and he will be using that as a bargaining chip. Providing Alonso with a competitive car could facilitate his decision to stay with the team. Alonso, like any champion, aims to compete for victories rather than settling for lower positions.

That being said, do you think this will be enough to keep Alonso in Aston Martin, and better yet, Formula One? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
